A membrane nitrogen generator is a device that separates nitrogen from compressed air using a polymer fiber membrane, based on the principle of selective permeability. This means that certain gases, such as oxygen and water vapor, will quickly dissipate through the membrane's fiber walls, leaving very dry nitrogen at the end of the membrane, ready for use in various industrial applications.
Another way to generate nitrogen is through pressure swing adsorption (PSA). PSA technology is the ideal and simplest method for industries requiring high levels of purity. Pressure swing adsorption separates nitrogen molecules from oxygen molecules, trapping oxygen from the compressed air stream through adsorption. Adsorption occurs when the molecules bind to an adsorbent; in this case, the oxygen molecules bind to a carbon molecular sieve.
A nitrogen gas purifier is designed to improve the purity of nitrogen generated on-site. It works by taking the lowest purity nitrogen from a generator and using a controlled hydrogen reaction to achieve a purity of 99.999% or higher. This two-stage process reduces the need for large volumes of feed air, resulting in lower energy consumption and reduced emissions. Nitrogen purifiers are ideal for applications requiring very high purity, providing an efficient and reliable solution for on-site nitrogen production systems.
Atlas Copco oxygen generators employ pressure swing adsorption (PSA) technology. The generator consists of two independent, pressurized tanks filled with a zeolite molecular sieve that separates oxygen from the inlet air. While one of these tanks produces oxygen, the other regenerates the saturated zeolite.
